Simple Tips for Creating an Amazing Atmosphere in Your Home

When decorating your home, you are looking to create an environment that matches your energy and the personality of your family. There a few design ideas that can help you create the most beautiful and comfortable atmosphere that reflects your values and personal style. We will discuss a few of those design points so that your decorating your home will be made simpler and more precise to who you are and what you want to convey to your guests.

Create a Focal Point

A focal point in a room is a point that immediately draws the eye when you enter. Many rooms have a natural focal point, like a fireplace, to draw the attention. If you do not have a natural focal point, you may need to create one. A great way to do this is to create an accent wall. An accent wall is one that stands out from the rest in the room. It is usually more decorated or may have a different color paint than the other walls garnering attention in a bold way. Shelving can also bring attention to the accent wall. Your shelving can contain books or themed decorative items. You may create an accent wall using a large glass enclosed cabinet displaying an array of unique collective pieces. When planning your room’s focal point, keep in mind that this area will receive most of the attention, so its decorative theme must reflect something you adore and would like to share with visitors.

Use Odd Numbers

In decorating, there is a common rule called the Rule of Thirds. This rule states that objects in groups of three or other odd numbers are more visually appealing as it creates both a focal point in the center and a line of symmetry and balance. The items can be similar in themes like color or shape but differ in texture, size or color shade. This rule allows for cohesion and variation at the same time. Consider this rule when placing candle holders, statues or potted plants on shelves or tables. Play around with this rule but overall go with your own instinct about what looks best in your room.

The Right Lighting

Lighting plays a huge component in creating a comfortable yet functional atmosphere. Ambient lighting is the room’s overall light source that does not focus on any specific area. Task lighting is lighting designed for tasks such as reading, or in a kitchen it may be over a stove or under cabinets to help with cooking and food prep. Accent lights are meant to highlight an item, like a painting. It is wise to have at least two of these kinds of light sources in a room for varying necessities. Ambient lighting that is too bright may be too energizing in the evening when you are attempting to wind down for the night. Whereas accent lighting that is too dim may pose a problem when trying to read or focus on something, inducing eye strain and discomfort. A balance of more than one lighting source allows the ability to adjust the level of lighting to get the right amount for any of your needs.

Negative Space

We can be so interested in decorating our home that there can be a tendency to over-decorate. For this reason, concepts like negative space must be considered. Negative space is an area in the room that is not decorated with many items allowing your eyes a resting place to avoid overstimulation. To keep your decor from feeling too cluttered, consider creating a space where there is little to no decorative items. A feng shui bedroom will include negative space to allow energy to flow through it uninterrupted adding a sense of peace to the inhabitants of the room. A room should have a balance of attention grabbing places with an area for ease and simplicity.
