5 Skills That Help Increase Your Personal ROI

While investing in the stock market or retirement is great, one of the very best investments you can make is in yourself. Some of the wealthiest and most successful people on the planet never stop learning. That doesn't always mean they keep going back to school to get more and more degrees, it simply means they are always building new skills. While some skills are important to learn from a trained professional, there are a number of different skills that you can learn on your own that will serve you well both in life and in business. Here are 5 great skills you can learn all on your own that will help increase your personal net worth just as much, if not more, than your bank balance will.

1. Cooking

Cooking is a basic that both men and women should master. With the number of how-to videos
available online, not to mention entire channels devoted to nothing but cooking, culinary skills
are something you should easily be able to teach yourself. Keep in mind, teaching yourself
doesn't prohibit you from taking a class or hiring someone to teach you, it simply means you
don't need some kind of degree.

2. Basic mechanical skills

You don't necessarily need to know how to completely rebuild an engine, but it's a good idea
to know some automotive basics. These can include things like checking and replacing your
own oil and doing basic car repairs and maintenance. Besides making you very handy to have
on road trips, this will also help insulate you somewhat from being swindled by shady mechanics.
In addition, understanding some basic mechanics can also open a number of doors for you just
by being able to help coworkers with car trouble.

3. Graphic design/ Photo editing

Mastering some basic graphic design skills can take you a long way in the digital age. This
is particularly important in the rise of the freelance or "side-gig" economy. Every skill that you
master that can help you create your own side business is a step towards potentially turning
that small side business into a booming, full-time operation. Before you become the next Steve
Jobs or Warren Buffet, however, you can also curry favor from coworkers by helping them create
flyers for office events or even photoshop their ex out of all their vacation photos.

4. Basic programming

Programming and coding are becoming more and more accessible to even those that don't
speak binary. Programming can help you do everything from build your own website to customize
your social media pages. Understanding the basics of programming is like being able to get under
the hood of your car and make it run exactly how you want it to. Some of the best programming
books are readily available online and can give you a great education for just the price of the book.

5. Self defense

Proper self-defense is another skill that both men and women should master. Knowing some
basics of how to protect yourself will serve you well in life. While you should never take unnecessary
risks or venture into areas that are known to be unsafe, being able to walk confidently through
reasonably safe streets might encourage you to do things like travel or explore your city more.
The more you explore, the more new things you might find to learn.

Having a wide range of skills and knowing that you can take care of yourself in a number of basic
areas can also give you a sense of confidence. That confidence can also help you do well in
other areas of life. Again and again, confidence ranks highly on the list of qualities others find to
be most attractive in a person. Possessing a wide range of skills that give you a sense of confidence
can often go far further towards promoting you in your career than almost any degree ever will.
Not that having one of those hurts either.
