How to Set Yourself Up for a Good Career

One of the biggest questions that everyone faces, especially when they first come into the workforce, is what career path to take. This decision can be a hard one to make for a variety of reasons. Some people simply do not think ahead and just take any job that comes their way, while others feel that they are stuck in one career path and are unable to change. Whatever the case may be, the simple fact is that life is too short to work at a job or have a career that you do not find satisfying. While the type of work that is exciting can vary from person to person, the steps to finding a career can be similar for everyone. Below are some ideas on how to help set you up for the career you want.

Figure Out What You Feel Passionate About

This process is important, because it can help determine what path you want to go down. You can start on this process by writing out a list of all the activities and things you enjoying doing. There really is no wrong or right answers in this exercise; you are writing out what you enjoy the most in life. This could be anything from fixing things to managing projects. Perhaps you have a gift for sales, in which case selling commercial auto insurance or other types of sales-oriented careers could be a good fit. Maybe you enjoy helping others in need and want to make a career out of that type of work. The point is to find the activities you enjoy the most.

Though this step may require some soul-searching, it can be a great help in narrowing down fields of interest for you.

Determine the Steps Necessary to Reach Your Passion

Once you have narrowed down your field of interests, you need to start figuring out how to get to your career. This is important, because while dreams may be easy to conjure up, they are much harder to materialize. Different career fields will require different levels of education. Some will require fairly little education, while others may require years of study.

Some career fields require no formal education, though they may require a large amount of self-study. One such option is becoming an entrepreneur. One piece of advice, coming from Lucas Sommer, is to try often and to fail fast. The idea with this piece of advice is that as an entrepreneur you cannot be afraid to try, and you can learn from your failures to grow a better business.

In short, figure out what needs to be done to get you from where you are to being in your desired career, whatever the steps may be.

Act

While this step may seem obvious, it is very often the stumbling block for those wanting to pursue their desired career. You have to act on the decisions and realizations you have made in the previous two steps. Many people want to wait to do something until they have the motivation to do it. This view, as Svetlana Whitener explains in her article in Forbes, is the wrong way to view motivation. Whitener explains that people should view motivation as the byproduct of action, not the other way around.

So in other words, stop waiting for the moment of motivation that will make all your work easy. That moment may not come, and if it does, it almost certainly will not stay forever. By acting with or without motivation, you can help ensure that you will continue to move closer to your goals.

Making a career choice is a big decision that requires a lot of thinking and soul-searching. However, by following the list above, you can hopefully help make the decision of a career field a bit easier and set yourself up with the career you want. For more from Whitener's article, click here.
