Our family is the most significant aspect of our lives and of our legacy. A good portion of our daily effort is dedicated solely to the preservation and protection of our family. While effort is crucial for their betterment, there are other ways that we can protect our family as well.
1. Teach Perseverance and Dedication
One thing all heroes have in common is their superhuman ability to achieve the impossible. While they may very well have fantasy-derived superhuman powers that help them to achieve such impossible things, their superhuman powers cannot accomplish such feats alone. It is the hero's complete commitment and dedication to an ideal, a goal, or a person or persons that is the true driving force behind their accomplishment.
Every day skill and talent will only get you so far until you hit an obstacle. Your dedication to the goal which lies beyond that obstacle is what will get you through your tough days. It's easy to stay motivated when you're winning and achieving things, but on days where you're feeling defeated and brought low by challenges or disappointments, it will be your unwavering dedication that pulls you through your dark times so that you can continue the fight and emerge victoriously.
2. Promote Emotional Health
A very prevalent lesson taught to mostly boys, and even some girls, is that crying is for babies. Children are also told to "suck it up" when they're hurt so that they stop expressing their hurt. While this may not seem like a learned behavior that is potentially damaging to the mental and physical health of your child, it actually is. A study conducted by psychologists from the Harvard School of Public Health has suggested a correlation between the suppression of emotions and a higher risk of an early death, including an early death due to cancer.
Experiencing distressing emotions and refraining from expressing them causes a buildup of internal stress that negatively affects your physical and mental health. The long-term effects of stress can be inconvenient and, in worst case scenarios, dire. To prevent long-term suffering and potential early death, show your children that it's okay to express emotions. Yes, even angry and negative emotions. Venting negative emotions help relieves inner stress and promote clarity of thinking and peace of mind.
3. Learn To Ask For Help
Although we like to think of ourselves as real-life superheroes, we can't always overcome insurmountable odds. At least, not alone. You must learn that it's okay to ask for help. Even the most formidable of heroes and villains have allies or assistants who provide them with ideas, motivation, an extra hand, and a reminder of what they're truly fighting for. Display a wisdom for knowing when to ask for help and a willingness to do so for your family to follow as an example.
4. Demonstrate the Value of Preparedness
Superheroes learn to think five steps ahead of their arch enemy. This demonstrates a high degree of forethought, discipline, and increases their chances of success. Learn to implement the value of preparedness into your own life by planning ahead for possible emergencies or distressing situations. You can do this by starting a savings account, purchasing a home warranty, and stocking up on non-perishable food items.
Additionally, you could start your family on a healthier lifestyle as a preventative measure for future health conditions. You will be pleasantly surprised at how much more peace of mind you have once you begin thinking ahead and preparing for possible challenges that may befall you. This would be an invaluable lesson for your family and provide them with a safety net of protection at the same time.
The lessons we teach our family will echo through future generations into our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To be remembered as the true superhero who is strong of heart and soft of touch, be sure to leave them with lasting lessons of inspiration, commitment, and wisdom.
